A short, beginner-friendly Japanese news post about a toki seen in Shiga Prefecture, far from Sado Island.

A Japanese crested ibis foraging quietly in a harvested rice paddy

A bird called a toki was seen in Shiga Prefecture.

It seems to have come from an island called Sado.

It is more than 300 kilometers from Sado Island to Shiga Prefecture.

That is a very long way!

The toki was looking for food in places such as rice fields.

If you see a toki, please do not go near it.

Let’s watch quietly from a distance.

It would be lovely to see toki in many different places one day.

News source: Ministry of the Environment, Japan, “First confirmed arrival of a toki in Shiga Prefecture” (October 9, 2026). This was the first sighting in Shiga since toki were released back into the wild in 2008, and the first confirmed sighting more than 300 km from Sado Island. This post retells the news in short, easy Japanese.
「佐渡島」 is read 「さどがしま」. It is the name of an island in Niigata Prefecture. 「来きたようです」 means “seems to have come”; the bird’s starting point is not completely certain.
