節分せつぶんは、日本にほんの季節きせつの行事ぎょうじです。家いえや学校がっこうで豆まめをまき、「鬼おには外そと、福ふくは内うち」と言いうことがあります。ここでの鬼おには、悪わるいものや病気びょうきを外そとへ出だすイメージです。

Setsubun is a seasonal event. People may throw beans and say oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi. Here, oni represents bad luck or harmful things being pushed outside.

A common explanation connects oni with the unlucky northeast direction called kimon. In the old zodiac direction system, that direction is ushitora: ox and tiger. The ox helps explain the horns, and the tiger helps explain the tiger-pattern clothing. It is a cultural explanation, not one fixed rule in every source.
